This report represents the largest AI visibility study we have conducted to date. Over 90 days, we submitted 12,000 brand-relevant queries — covering product recommendations, service comparisons, local business discovery, and professional advice — to ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. Each response was analyzed for brand citations, recommendation positioning, accuracy, sentiment, and source attribution. The resulting dataset provides the most detailed picture available of how AI platforms recommend businesses and what brands can do to influence those recommendations.
Study Methodology and Scope
The 12,000 queries were distributed across 23 industries with proportional weighting based on commercial AI query volume estimates. Each query was submitted to all five AI platforms within a 48-hour window to minimize temporal variance. We used standardized prompts that reflected genuine user intent patterns derived from analysis of actual AI platform search logs shared by partner organizations. Queries were categorized into four intent types: product or service recommendation, comparison or evaluation, local discovery, and informational or advisory. Each AI response was scored on five dimensions: brand citation presence, citation position, factual accuracy, sentiment, and whether the citation included actionable information like contact details or pricing.
Platform Coverage and Query Distribution

Finding 1: Only 16 Percent of Brands Are Cited Across All Five Platforms
The most striking finding is the fragmentation of AI visibility across platforms. Only 16 percent of brands that received citations appeared consistently across all five major AI platforms. Forty-one percent appeared on only one or two platforms. This means most businesses that think they have AI visibility because they checked ChatGPT are invisible on three or four other platforms that collectively represent significant discovery volume. The cross-platform consistency gap is the single largest missed opportunity in AI visibility today.

Finding 2: The First-Mentioned Brand Gets 47 Percent of Click-Through
When AI responses mention multiple brands, the first-mentioned brand captures a disproportionate share of user attention and action. Our click-through analysis, conducted through partner tracking integrations, shows the first-cited brand receives approximately 47 percent of all clicks generated by the response, the second brand receives 26 percent, and all subsequent mentions share the remaining 27 percent. This first-position advantage mirrors the well-documented primacy effect in traditional search results but is even more pronounced because AI responses present brands within narrative context that implicitly endorses the ordering.
Finding 3: Review Volume Thresholds Vary Dramatically by Industry
We identified clear minimum review volume thresholds below which AI platforms rarely cite a business. These thresholds vary significantly by industry. Local restaurants needed a minimum of 45 reviews across platforms to be cited. Professional service firms needed only 12, reflecting lower overall review volumes in B2B categories. Healthcare providers needed 25, with review recency weighted more heavily than in other categories. SaaS products needed as few as 8 reviews, but required them on specialized platforms like G2 or Capterra rather than general review sites. These thresholds are not absolute, but brands below them were cited in fewer than 5 percent of relevant queries.
Review Freshness: The 90-Day Decay Curve
Review recency emerged as a more powerful signal than review volume above the minimum threshold. Brands with 10 or more reviews in the past 90 days were 2.7x more likely to be cited than brands with higher total volume but no recent reviews. This suggests AI models apply a freshness decay function similar to but more aggressive than Google local search algorithms. The practical implication is clear: a consistent flow of two to three new reviews per month outperforms a large historical review bank that has gone dormant. Businesses should treat review generation as an ongoing operational process, not a one-time campaign.
Finding 4: Content Citability Follows the Inverted Pyramid
We analyzed the structural characteristics of content that was most frequently cited by AI models and identified a clear pattern: citable content follows an inverted pyramid structure. The most frequently cited content pieces placed the key factual claim or recommendation-worthy statement in the first two sentences of each section, followed by supporting evidence and context. Content that buried key facts within long narrative passages was cited 68 percent less frequently than content with front-loaded facts. This finding has immediate practical implications for how businesses should structure their web content: lead with the citable fact, then provide context — not the reverse.

Finding 5: Hallucination Rates Are Declining But Still Significant
Across all 12,000 queries, 8.3 percent of brand citations contained at least one factual inaccuracy — down from 14.1 percent in our 2025 mid-year study. The most common hallucination types were incorrect pricing (34 percent of hallucinations), wrong location or address (22 percent), inaccurate service descriptions (19 percent), fabricated awards or certifications (15 percent), and incorrect founding dates or history (10 percent). Businesses with comprehensive schema markup had a hallucination rate of just 2.1 percent, compared to 12.7 percent for businesses without structured data — a 6x reduction. This is the strongest argument we have found for schema markup investment: it does not just improve citation rate, it protects against citation inaccuracy.
This study confirms that AI visibility is maturing as a measurable, optimizable channel but remains significantly underexploited by most businesses. The fragmentation across platforms, the first-position advantage, the review threshold dynamics, the content structure patterns, and the declining but still significant hallucination rates all point to the same conclusion: businesses that invest in systematic, multi-platform AI visibility optimization today are capturing an outsized share of the fastest-growing discovery channel in digital marketing.
